Interior Design-Victorian House Ryton

I was contacted by Sarah and Ian Meikle as they were struggling with ideas for the Family room/ 2nd sitting room area of their house. Sarah had followed my Facebook page for some time, and I was delighted when she got in touch.

The space is an open plan space in the middle of their Victorian house, it’s open to the stairs and partially open to the kitchen.

They were struggling with the identity of this room, they decided to get in touch for Interior design consultancy for their space. It is used as a 2nd sitting room and also the main space where the family host their extended family at Christmas and other celebrations. One thing that was very important was it had to be able to fit their large table which folds into a console size.

We pulled the mood board together with different elements to enable us to successfully zone the rooms.

The clients were presented with the mood board and all the items were agreed.

After visiting Sarah and Ian I set about zoning the space, which included the kitchen area. There is a lovely extension which was being used as another entry into the room.

The first thing I considered was putting a table in this space to create a social eating space and somewhere for the children to do their homework. There was already a padded bench in the room, so table and chair options were chosen for the space. By doing this it also created more space in the kitchen.

In the main room all existing items were removed, and we arranged for the joiner to lay a new floor from the front door right through to the back, it immediately lightened up the space.

We arranged the decorator, and the walls were decorated right up to the ceiling, originally the colour that was on, stopped at the picture rail.

The stairs, 2nd lounge, and kitchen were all painted in Cornforth White from Farrow and Ball. This unified the space as they all flow into each other, creating a brighter, cleaner look.

We work with trusted local trades, and we managed them from start to finish including quotes etc.

In the sitting area we used the existing Sofa, one of the chairs and purchased an additional chair to match. The area was enhanced with a large new rug, new console table and tv stand. Cushions throws, candles a mirror, wall art, accessories and a large clock were purchased to accessorise the room. We added to the new purchases by using the existing light, floor lamp and lamps as they complimented the room.

Once all the items arrived the whole space was styled and handed over to the client to enjoy.

Client's comments

'After years of struggling with an area of our house which is a dining room/living room/kitchen & hallway, I finally contacted Lorraine. I'm so glad I did!

The process was so easy for us. Lorraine arranged everything and worked with us to ensure the style suited our taste. We now have a beautifully decorated room which really works for our family. I definitely recommend Willow & Maine'.
